1916This is the year that Rodman Wanamaker met with Walter Hagen and several other top players and amateurs to lay the groundwork for Wanamaker's idea for a governing body that would help grow the game. 82 members were elected on April 10 and the The PGA of America was born. Jim Barnes won the inaugural championship.

1921Walter Hagen wins the Championship
1923The first Championship to be decided in overtime between Gene Sarazen and Walter Hagen. Sarazen wins.

Denny Shute wins back-to-back PGA Championships, a feat unequaled for 63 years
1937Amateur golfer Bobby Jones extends an invitation for the first Senior PGA Championship at the Augusta National Golf Club.
1941Sports writer Grantland Rice suggests The PGA Hall of Fame. 12 members are inducted this first year
1954The first PGA Merchandise show is held between the PGA National Golf Club's clubhouse and the first tee at Dunedin, FL.
1956The PGA headquarters moves from Chicago to Dunedin, Florida. The first PGA Golf Professional of the Year Award is created.
1958The first "stroke-play" Championship is held. First live telecast of the Championship.
1961The PGA Caucasions-only clause is struck down.
1965The PGA headquarters moves from Dunedin to JDM Country Club in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida.
1968The Tournament Players Division splits from The PGA to form what will eventually become the PGA Tour.
1970The PGA of America apprentice program begins
1971Jack Nicklaus is the first professional to win all four Majors - The MAster, the US Open, British Open, and the PGA Championship.
1972James Fogertey becomes the first PGA Master Professional
1973PGA of America moves to Lake Park, Florida. The first PGA Cup Match is held at Pinehurst Country Club.
1975World Series of Golf is created
1976First PGA Junior Championship is held
1978The PGA Junior Golf Foundation is created
1979The Grand Slam of Golf is created
1981PGA of America National Office Building dedicated at PGA National Golf Course in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida
1984The Oldsmobile Scramble is created
1986The Professional Golf Management School is established at Starkeville Mississippi State University
1990First live network coverage of PGA Seniors' Championship is broadcast on NBC Sports
1993Membership in the PGA of America reaches 23,000
1994PGA's National Golf Month expands into an industry-wide campaign
1996PGA Junior Series launches
1999The PGA Learning Center opens
2001Growth of the Game grant program begins
2003The PGA Historical Center at PGA Village opens to the general public. Launch of the Play Golf America campaign
2004The online PGA Certified Professional Program launches
2005Over 122,000 free lessons given during PGA Free Lesson Month
2006Tiger Woods reaches 50 career victories at the age of 30


Professional Golfers' Association (Europe)

1901The London and Counties Golf Professionals’ Association was created on September 9, 1901 to represent British Professional Golfers. Later in the year it was renamed as The Professional Golfers' Association.
1974A separate Tournament Division is created.
1982The first tournament is held outside Europe, the Tunisian Open.
1984The Tournament Division becomes the PGA European Tour.
1986The Satellite Tour is created.
1988Introduction of the Volvo Bonus Pool to encourage members to play in the European Tour.
1989The first Asian tournament is held, the Dubai Desert Classic. The Order of Merit is introduced.
1990The Satellite Tour is renamed as the Challenge Tour.
1997The European Professional Development Tour is created.
1998The Volvo Bonus Pool is discontinued.
2002The PGA EuroPro Tour is created.
